Frequently asked questions

How do You differ from other Physical therapy clinics?

Physical therapists are trained on how to treat acute and chronic conditions alike. With the latest research and advancements in the understanding and treatment for persistent pain, it has become apparent that treating persistent pain requires special attention, time and expertise. Many physical therapists, through no fault of their own, cannot afford the time necessary to concentrate on the comprehensive approach required for chronic pain conditions. My practice specializes in the treatment of persistent pain conditions with the use of biofeedback training and other modalities specifically designed for the treatment of pain. In the Nevada City and Grass Valley areas, I am the only physical therapist who is trained and experienced in treating conditions of the autonomic nervous system with peripheral biofeedback training. I am also the only pelvic floor physical therapist in the area that provides high tech, multi-modality biofeedback training for pelvic, low back and abdominal conditions. If you are currently being treated by a pelvic floor therapist, and would like to include biofeedback as part of your care, then I can work closely with your therapist as part of a team to provide the biofeedback therapy piece.

What are your rates and do you take insurance?

My practice is cash based. This allows me to provide superior care that specifically addresses your needs without the treatment time restrictions that the insurance companies impose. This means that I am an “out-of-network provider”. If you have a private insurance (excluding Medicare), I will gladly give you a super-bill which is an invoice of physical therapy codes and prices for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Unfortunately, Medicare does not reimburse for treatment performed by out-of-network clinicians.

Initial Evaluation is $140, subsequent visits are $100.
The initial visit is approximately 1.5 hours and the follow up visits are approximately one hour.

How do I know if the treatment is going to be right for me?

On the “Services” page there is a list of common conditions that I treat. If you don’t see your condition on that list, it doesn’t mean that I can’t necessarily help you. Please feel free to email or phone me with any questions or concerns that you may have.

How often will I need treatment?

Your treatment plan will be as individual as you are and I will be able to give you a better idea of the number of visits necessary to reach your goals. The number of visits will depend on the complexity of your situation, how well you follow through with your home program (if you have one) and your response to treatment. Acute problems (less than 3 months) usually only take a few visits, however if your condition is chronic (greater than 6 months), the treatment will usually take a longer amount of time. A typical biofeedback treatment program is usually 6-12 visits.

Do You Treat Children and Teenagers?

I treat children starting at the age of 12 all the way through age 18. That being said, what’s more important than the age of your child is whether or not your child is motivated and interested in receiving care. Biofeedback requires a certain level of focus and attention. Children and teenagers can gain a lot from biofeedback training because their minds are naturally curious and willing to learn.

Will I need a referral?

Most likely no, you won’t need a referral from your doctor, at least not initially. I am a direct access practice, which means that I do not require a doctor’s referral for you to receive services but the state of California requires you to have a referral for skilled physical therapy services after 45 consecutive days or 12 visits (whichever occurs first). If you are currently under the care of a doctor or other healthcare provider for the same condition that I will be treating you for, then I feel that it is a good idea for you to obtain a referral so that the lines of communication will be open between myself and that provider. I can serve you better if we work as a team to help you reach your goals. If you are seeking my services for other reasons besides health concerns, such as performance enhancement or general wellness, (these are services that your insurance provider probably doesn’t cover, such as wellness services) than a referral is not required.

What should I wear?

Please dress comfortably, in loose fitting clothing. If you are going to be doing surface electrocardiography biofeedback training, then please make sure that the skin in the area that the sensors will be placed is clean without lotions.
